The AP World History Exam is 3 hours and 15 minutes. The first section consists of 55 multiple choice questions and 4 short answer responses. This takes one hour and 45 minutes. Section two of the exam is answering 1 document based question as well as writing 1 long essay. This section lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Essays are super important when it comes to AP World History, but don't worry we write so many throughout the year without even realizing, which is more than enough to prepare us for all the essays on the AP.
SAQ- SAQ stands for Short Answer Question, which takes about 12 minutes each approximately. If you manage your time efficiently, The length of short answers are not important but the quality of the answers to the questions is the best way to receive full credit.
LEQ- LEQ stands for Long Essay Question. LEQ's include concepts of comparisons, causation, CCOT (continuity and change over time), or periodization. These are concepts that you will be familiar with from learning it throughout the year and it will help you with the AP Exam.
DBQ- DBQ stands for Document Based Question which is 25% of your score on the AP exam. This essay is analyzing and explaining 7 documents which are given to you. HIPPO is an element which is used to be able to analyze these documents and effectively write your DBQ. 15 minutes is an ideal time to to analyze these documents in a testing situation and then using the rest of the time given to complete the essay,
Synthesis- Synthesis is used in two essays, LEQ and DBQ. It's a concept where the main argument of your essay is connected to outside information. This connection can be based off of 3 different ideas. The first one is a development in a different historical time period, situation, era, or geographical area. The second is a course theme and approach to history that is not the focus of the essay (such as political, economic, social, cultural, to intellectual history). The final idea is a different discipline or field of inquiry (such as economics, government and politics, art history, or anthropology).
Managing Your Time- Since the AP exam is timed, it is crucial to watch your time and not to continue working after your time has been completed. Analog watches are allowed in the testing room for personal uses if you decide to bring one, but there are clocks in the front of the testing rooms to also manage time. It is very important to answer the questions to your best ability but also do it quickly, Time management is a big part of the AP class and the AP exam.
